![]() Short answer: 2nd best player in the world during his prime behind one and only Michael Jordan. His peak was cut short by a back injury that lingered for the rest of his career, so his longevity was poor compared to Malone, Duncan, Garnett, etc. He had an exaggerated “tough guy” image, but he was warm and generous with fans. Hilarious and absolutely brutal commentary in his interviews. And he dunked with the ferocity of Jordan, but even more frequently.Īnd he was also the most charismatic player in the league after Magic retired. Think pinpoint no look behind the back passes, dominant post play, Rodman-level rebounding, and one or two crazy ~ where did THAT come from ~ type plays every night. He was one of those guys who would elevate his game in big moments, make all kinds of plays in the clutch, and make his teammates better. He likely would have a ring (along with a handful of other NBA greats) had he not played during the Jordan era. At his peak, he was better than anyone in the league not named Jordan. ![]() He was my favorite player in the late 80s-early 90s. But that's also from my perspective as a layman, who doesn't know what makes someone truly great in this sport Watching his career highlights, he doesn't come off as all that dominant or electric compared to other greats. That sort of thing doesn't happen if you're just some consistently above average player for a long time. Recently on the New Heights podcast, Travis Kelce said Charles was his favorite athlete growing up, to the point where he wanted to be him so badly that he'd introduce himself to people as Charles rather than Travis when he was a kid. People never mention him as even a top 20 - 30 player of all time, and obviously he's not on the level of someone like Shaq but he's also super iconic in his own right. But he only has one 50+ point game in his entire career, never won a championship, and doesn't really have that high of career numbers in any major stat afaik. Shaq constantly gets mentioned as a top 5 - 10 player of all time, and Charles is a HoFer too, so he must also have been really great. However I love watching Inside the NBA bc Shaq and Charles together are a hilarious combo, and Ernie and Kenny fit in well too. So there's a lot that I'm very ignorant of within the sport, and I don't have many strong opinions on much of anything. I'm an extremely casual basketball fan - I know all the teams and many players, I watch the finals and some playoff series every year, etc, but I watch much more football, soccer, and hockey and I didnt play basketball past freshman year of high school. New Post Game Thread Jaylen Brown puts on the mask and drops 25/3/4 in 3 quarters as the Celtics even the series 1-1 with the 76ers Top Team Subreddit PostsĤ If nothing else out of the series happens we have this.
